“Portland (WGME) — PORTLAND (WGME) -- Women making history in Portland.

27 female athletes from all over New England are officially signed with Portland Rising, Portland's first women's professional ultimate frisbee team.

It's taken years for ultimate frisbee to move to the professional playing field and athletes who just signed with Portland Rising say it's been worth the wait.

"It feels like 5-year-old Kate would be over the moon if she knew this is where I'd be," says Kate Powers, ultimate frisbee player.

Players say this is paving the way for future generations of female athletes to dream a little bigger.

"For the people who have wanted to be professional athletes and haven't gotten to see themselves at that level before, now they can look on the Portland Rising field and see this incredibly high thing to strive for," says Maddie Purcell, co-owner of Portland Rising.

Co-founders of Portland Rising says ultimate frisbee has always been a loved sport in New England so when the chance came to bring a women's professional team to Portland, it just made sense.”
